How do the Personalized Learning Surveys work?

The Surveys help educators figure out where they are with personalized learning by both diving into the details and placing those details in context—by zooming in, in other words, and then zooming way out.

Zooming In
The Surveys examine both teacher and student perspectives to deliver a detailed, 360-degree view of classrooms’ learning experiences. Most items correspond to research-based components of our student-centered approach to instruction.

The Survey in Action

To gain insight on Learner Focused practices, the Student Survey explores different dynamics of how deeply students think teachers understand them.

Zooming Out
Details are only as good as the perspective you use to make sense of them. Our survey reports place findings in broader context, showing how aggregate results fare against:

  • similar schools and districts in the region;
  • national standards and averages; and
  • historical data, once a district or school has taken the PL Surveys multiple times

Teachers also receive data on how their responses for each item compare with student responses from across their schools.

Measuring the Learning Experience

The LEAP Learning Framework, which guides our work on the ground, is the foundation of our Personalized Learning Surveys. The Framework stratifies the learner-centered approach into its core components and the majority of Survey items map to one of these components. You don’t need any familiarity with the Framework to take the Surveys, but using it to structure our analysis lets us give portraits of learning environments that are robust, multidimensional and organized. The Framework offers more than 100 strategies for bringing each component to life, and once educators have their results, they can reference the Framework for new ideas and solutions.

Watch

We made a series of short videos to help explain the nuts and bolts of the LEAP Personalized Learning Surveys.

We deliver the most powerful reports for classrooms when students and teachers both participate. For teachers in grades K-8 and students in grades 4-8, our reports show schools and classrooms where they fall on a continuum from “Emerging Personalization” to “High Personalization” along three components of personalized learning.
